Ad networks are companies that sell ads across thousands of websites to advertisers. They either purchase unsold / leftover ads that most sites assume that they won’t be able to sell directly to advertisers and/or want to somehow sell this inventory cheap to these ad networks OR the ad networks purchase a bulk of ad inventory on the cheap.

Ad Networks will have at least a few hundred up to a ten’s of thousands of websites.

Ad Networks offer the following benefits:
- purchase ads against certain content channels (eg Sports, Music, News, Women, Health, etc)
- They have huge reach against a large population at very cheap cheap CPM rates
- Centralized contact/mediator that allows Advertisers to place ads across thousands of sites thru one contact
- they’re willing to agree to a Cost Per Click or Cost Per Action.
- they can/will optimize the advertisers campaign and run the ads in places that are performing well
- Most can Behavioral Target
- Most can retarget users (eg. Clicked on ad but didn’t complete Sale, next time they deliver an ad to user they can serve an upsell/crossell ad)

Cons:
- they don’t all let you know exactly where the ads run. They can give you a list of a few sites, but they most won’t disclose performance on a site by site level or provide a full list
- you can provide them with a list of sites you definitely don’t want to run on, but they won’t guarantee what sites they will run on
-they offer so much and takes a while to figure out what are the right tactics to use

ad networks to work with are Platform-A (owned by AOL), Google, Specific Media, 24/7 Real Media, Casale, Permission Data, Value Click, Tribal Fusion, Yahoo’s Blue Lithium, Dedicated Media, and many many more

Where can i get a ‘geniue internet marketing course’ for Free or at moderate price? Not system that promise heaven and earth but, does’nt work.

I am researching online affiliate marketing. Say I am looking to sell something online. Let’s also say I want to leverage affiliate marketing networks to advertise my product. As the merchant, is it common to have the ability to choose which type of advertising channel you are marketed to or is it more like a shotgun blast across the internet?

Or is it the other way around… do the affiliates choose what is eventually advertised by their site?

I am looking for something which gives excellent insight into affiliate marketing, online advertsing networks, PPC, SEO, CPC, CPM, CPA, blogs, forums and marketing on social networks, Web 2.0 etc. Also has to be current content – not something written in 2002 or something – less than a year or 2 old

There is no definitive guide as such, but there are some great resources out there to help. There’s a site called utalkmarketing.com which has a digital section- http://www.utalkmarketing.com/Speciality.aspx?nav=speciality_digital
It has a best practice section with case studies and also a basic info section if you are starting from scratch. The great thing is, they are all written within the last 6 months or so. Another way in is to look at some books although a lot of these are too old as online marketing is constantly changing. There’s one i use called ‘Marketing Through Search Optimization: How to Be Found on the Web’ which is a good jumping off point and was written in the last 2 years. I hope this helps.
